3 teams who may sign Milan Lucic after 2023 arrest for assault & battery feat. San Jose Sharks
Former Boston Bruins forward Milan Lucic has been working out in New Jersey, looking to get back into the NHL, as reported by insider Frank Seravalli.
Milan Lucic, who is ineligible to play in the NHL, has been eyeing a return to the NHL following a series of legal and personal issues. He was arrested for assault and battery in 2023, leading to an indefinite leave of absence.
Since then, he has entered the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance program. Additionally, his contract expired at the end of last season, making him a UFA.
Considering that Lucic is looking to make a comeback, here’s a look at three teams who might be interested in signing the veteran forward if and when he’s cleared to return to the ice.
Three teams who may sign Milan Lucic after 2023 arrest
#3 Chicago Blackhawks
The Blackhawks have been assembling a supporting cast of strong veteran leadership to surround up-and-coming superstar Connor Bedard. Players like Nick Foligno, Seth Jones and Tyler Bertuzzi possess qualities that could help mold Bedard into a strong leader and future captain.
As such, Milan Lucic would support Bedard, given Lucic’s tough, physical style and strong voice. While Lucic would most likely occupy a depth role on the team, getting an opportunity to resume his NHL career would benefit both the Hawks and Lucic.
#2 Columbus Blue Jackets
The Blue Jackets have been going through a transition over the last couple of seasons. Like Chicago, they have several young players who could use a strong veteran presence for support and guidance.
In particular, Milan Lucic could support Patrik Laine, assuming Columbus doesn’t trade him this offseason. Like Lucic, Laine has also been in the Player Assistance program.
This common point could serve both players to support one another as they overcome the challenges affecting their personal lives and performances on the ice.
#1 San Jose Sharks
The Sharks are looking to emerge from their rebuild following the selection of Macklin Celebrini as the No. 1 overall pick in this past NHL Draft. Thus, the Sharks might want to insulate Celebrini from the pressure that comes with being a rising star.
Lucic is not only a solid veteran presence but can also patrol the ice. While he wouldn't necessarily be a personal bodyguard for Celebrini, Lucic’s presence would send a message to other teams that there’s someone ready to drop the gloves if need be.
Overall, Lucic could find a worthwhile opportunity with San Jose, given that he and the team have nothing to lose by joining forces. If that’s the case, he could potentially revive his career from the low point it hit this past season.
