Brady Tkachuk landing spots: Top 3 potential trade destinations for Senators captain feat. Carolina Hurricanes

Ottawa Senators captain Brady Tkachuk has been the subject of trade speculation since the end of the regular season. With the Senators finishing at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings, rumors have circulated regarding Tkachuk’s departure.

While Senators’ GM Steve Staios has denied rumors, the trade chatter won’t go away. According to insider Pierre LeBrun, Staios said (via TSN):

"There is absolutely no validity to it."

However, those comments contradict information from other sources. The Athletic’s Jeremy Rutherford reported on ESPN’s The Opening Drive that Brady Tkachuk is:

"Probably available."

With that in mind, here is a look at three possible landing spots for the Senators’ captain. These landing spots may solve several needs across the board, including the Senators’ positional requirements.

3 potential trade destinations for Brady Tkachuk

#1: Boston Bruins

The likelihood of moving Tkachuk to a division rival may be slim. However, the Senators are among the teams looking to upgrade their goaltending. Joonas Korpisalo, Anton Forsberg, and Mads Sogard had a subpar year.

With Linus Ullmark reportedly available, a deal involving Brady Tkachuk for Ullmark as the main pieces could make sense. Both clubs fill positional needs as the Senators can remove Tkachuk’s $8.2 million cap hit.

The challenge for the Sens, however, would be to sign Ullmark to a long-term deal. Boston benefits by getting a 24-year-old winger who could easily complement their top six.

#2: St. Louis Blues

The St. Louis Blues are going through a transition period that doesn’t quite seem like a rebuild. After winning the Cup in 2019, the Blues finished well out of a playoff spot this season.

With several up-and-coming players such as leading scorer Robert Thomas, the Blues could use Tkachuk’s grit, speed, and talent. Tkachuk would immediately plug into the Blues’ top line, helping balance the Blues’ first two lines.

Going the other way may be a combination of prospects and draft picks. As for goalies, it seems hard for the Blues to part with Jordan Binnington. So, backup Joel Hofer could be an interesting piece in the deal.

Ultimately, the Blues have pieces to make the deal work. However, Ottawa may have to settle for futures rather than players who can cause an immediate impact.

#3: Carolina Hurricanes

The Carolina Hurricanes have a conundrum on their hands. Martin Necas reportedly wants to be out of Carolina. According to CapFriendly, Necas is an RFA this offseason. He’ll be looking for a raise from his $863,000 deal.

While the Canes could re-sign Necas, he doesn’t seem too convinced with Carolina. So this situation opens the door for a Sens-Canes swap involving both players. Both teams swap young forwards, with Ottawa gaining cap space to pursue a starting goaltender.

Meanwhile, Tkachuk could be a great replacement for Jake Guentzel if Guentzel doesn’t re-sign with the Canes.

The Hurricanes will be looking to add this offseason after coming close to the Conference Finals. Brady Tkachuk might just be the piece that puts Carolina over the top.
