Christopher Tanev is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman for the Toronto Maple Leafs. He started his junior career in 2006, playing for the Durham Fury in the OPJHL. In the following season, Tanev split his playing time among three teams. He spent the season playing for the Durham Fury, Stouffville Spirit and Markham Royals. He signed with the Vancouver Canucks in 2010 and made his NHL playoff debut in 2011.

Tanev scored his first NHL goal in February 2013 and signed a five-year extension with Vancouver in 2015. He joined the Calgary Flames in 2020 on a four-year, $18 million contract. On February 28, 2024, he was traded to the Dallas Stars in a three-team deal. Tanev signed a six-year, $27 million contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs on July 1, 2024.

Chris Tanev had frequent injuries throughout his career. He dealt with repeated upper and lower body injuries, especially between 2015 and 2025. He also suffered from ankle, leg, knee, groin, thumb, head, and mouth injuries.

Upper Body Injury

Chris Tanev has had many upper-body injuries throughout his career. In the 2022–23 season, Chris Tanev dealt with multiple upper-body issues, including missing six games in April 2023. In December 2023, he missed three games due to an upper-body injury. In the 2024–25 season, he missed games in February and March 2025 with the same type of injury, as per Sports Forecaster.

Lower Body Injury

Chris Tanev has also had several lower-body injuries. In the 2016–17 season, he missed 20 games starting on November 5, 2016, because of a lower-body injury, as per Sports Forecaster. Other injuries include a hip injury in October 2018, which caused him to miss five games. He suffered a knee injury in March 2018 that sidelined him for the rest of the season.

Tanev had an ankle injury in February 2019, which kept him out for 11 games. He also dealt with a strained groin in December 2017, missing seven games. His thumb and finger injuries include a broken thumb in January 2014 and a broken finger in March 2014.
