The Edmonton Oilers are a professional ice hockey team based in Edmonton and presently compete in the Pacific Division of the Western Conference. Notably, they started as the Alberta Oilers during their days in the World Hockey Association (WHA). However, the team shifted bases after the merger of WHA and the NHL in 1979.

The Oilers quickly rose to prominence in the 1980s, fueled by the exceptional talent of Wayne Gretzky and a formidable roster that included future Hall of Famers like Mark Messier, Glenn Anderson, Jari Kurri, and Paul Coffey. This era saw the Oilers claim five Stanley Cups and dominate the league. Despite Gretzky's departure in 1988, the Oilers remained competitive, with Messier leading them to one more Stanley Cup victory in the 1989–90 season. However, subsequent years saw the team struggle to maintain its elite status, experiencing a mixture of triumphs and setbacks throughout the 1990s. In recent years, the Oilers have shown signs of resurgence, particularly in the 2016–17 season, when they achieved their highest number of wins since the 1980s. Spearheaded by center Connor McDavid, the team displayed promise, although subsequent seasons witnessed fluctuations in performance.
