Elliotte Friedman lists out the next steps for Oilers as Blues eye double swoop for Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway
On Tuesday, Edmonton Oilers defenseman Philip Broberg and forward Dylan Holloway received offer sheets from the St. Louis Blues. The franchise offered a two-year contract valued at $4.58 million annually for Broberg and a two-year deal worth $2.29 million annually for Holloway.
Given that both players are currently restricted free agents, Edmonton will decide whether or not they want to match either of the two deals. NHL insider Elliotte Friedman discussed the situation, breaking down the next steps for both teams.
The Oilers are looking to prevent as much roster overhaul as possible and are dancing around the salary cap. Because of that, they are trying to minimize spending, which could be a problem. The two-year offer sheets Broberg and Holloway received are significantly more than what Edmonton offered.
Friedman broke down the situation on X (formerly Twitter), writing, in part:
"Oilers have seven days to decide on matching. If they don’t match, will get a second-round pick (Broberg) and/or a third-rounder (Holloway). St. Louis made a trade with Pittsburgh to re-acquire their 2025 second-round pick so they could do this with Broberg (you must have your own picks to do an offer sheet)."
Looking at how Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway have played in recent seasons
Last season, Philip Broberg split time between the NHL and the AHL, playing 49 games for the Bakersfield Condors in the AHL and 12 games for the Edmonton Oilers. This was a big pivot for Broberg, who had previously split time between the NHL and the AHL during the 2022-23 season.
In that instance, Broberg played for the Oilers in 46 games while playing just seven for the Condors. After logging eight points in the NHL that season, the team kept Broberg on their roster for the early part of the 2023-24 season.
After the defenceman logged just two points in 12 games, he was sent back to the AHL, where he had 38 points in 49 games.
Dylan Holloway will similarly be looking to make waves in the NHL this season after splitting time between the Oilers and the Condors in the last two seasons.
Holloway logged nine points over 51 games with the Oilers during the 2022-23 season. However, he was far more efficient in the AHL, with 10 points in just 12 games.
Last year, over 38 games with the Oilers, Holloway logged nine points, however in the AHL, he was once again a force to be reckoned with, logging 16 points in just 18 games.
