Flames notes: 3 major takeaways from Calgary's Day 1 of training camp

The Calgary Flames officially opened training camp on Thursday. The Flames enter this season hoping to bounce back from a tough campaign last year.

Following several major offseason moves, Calgary has plenty of roster spots up for grabs, so fans can expect some interesting action as training camp unfolds.

Here’s a closer look at three major takeaways from Day 1 of the Calgary Flame’s training camp.

3 major takeaways from Calgary Flames Day 1 of training camp

#1. Getting back into the groove

The atmosphere was one of excitement as players and coaches looked forward to getting back on the ice. While players had informal skates before training camp, players were looking to get back into the fold with coaches and newcomers.

Defenseman Rasmus Andersson said (via NHL.com):

“I’ve kind of been itching at it the last few days, a lot of new faces, getting to know everyone. Just working on timing, a new structure a little bit, exciting times.”

Andersson’s words underscore the excitement going around the club as everyone eases back into the groove.

#2. Leading by example

With several new faces on the team, captain Mikael Backlund is looking to set the tone for the team. Backlund referred to the team’s leadership, saying:

“As leaders and the captains of the team, we’ve got to drive this team and then we have a chance to do something special.
“If we pull this team in the right direction, it’s going to be a special year and we’re going to be remembered for that," he added.

Backlund’s leadership will be crucial in establishing a work ethic that can turn the ship around in Calgary. The club will be looking to erase the memories of a regrettable season last year by setting a high standard across the club.

#1. Battle for the starting goalie job

The biggest roster battle heading into this year’s training cap is in goal. Following Jacob Markstrom’s departure, the starting role is up for grabs. Similarly, the backup job is also available.

The leading candidates this season are Dan Vladar, Dustin Wolf, and Devin Cooley. Vladar and Wolf have spent some time within the organization, while Cooley signed as a free agent this offseason.

The three netminders are likely to compete for the starting and backup roles, with Vladar and Wolf potentially leading the way.

However, there are no guarantees this season. Whoever makes the team will need to prove they are ready to handle the responsibility.

Overall, the Flames are likely to ice a young goalie tandem this season. This situation means the defense will need to play well in front of whoever takes over the crease.
