NHL: Stanley Cup Final-Edmonton Oilers at Florida Panthers

How many NHL and NBA teams from cities have made the Finals in the same year?

Several cities in North America have both an NHL and NBA team, and there have been instances when both squads have made it to the Finals in the same year.

Although both teams from the same city having simultaneous success is rare, there have been nine instances since 1957 when this has happened.

NHL and NBA teams from cities who made the Finals in the same year

#1, 1957, Celtics-Bruins

In 1957, the Boston Bruins and Boston Celtics made history by becoming the first NBA and NHL teams from the same city to reach their respective Finals.

However, it was not a double celebration for Boston as the Bruins lost to the Montreal Canadiens in five games, while the Celtics beat the St. Louis Hawks in seven games.

#2, 1958, Celtics-Bruins

For the second consecutive year, the Boston Bruins and Boston Celtics made it all the way to Finals again.

Both teams lost that year, in six games, as the St. Louis Hawks and the Montreal Canadiens triumphed against the Boston teams.

#3, 1972, Rangers-Knicks

In 1972, the New York Rangers and New York Knicks both made it to the Finals.

The city did not get to celebrate even one championship that year as the Rangers lost to the Boston Bruins in six games, while the Knicks lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in five games.

#4, 1974, Bruins-Celtics

The Boston Bruins and Boston Celtics both made it to the Finals again in 1974.

The Celtics defeated the Milwaukee Bucks in seven games to win the championship, while the top-seeded Bruins lost their series against the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

#5, 1980, Flyers-76ers

In 1980, the Philadelphia Flyers and the Philadelphia 76ers both made it to the Finals, and in addition, the city also witnessed two more of their teams compete for a title with the MLB's Philadelphia Phillies and NFL's Philadelphia Eagles following suit.

However, The 76ers were defeated by the Los Angeles Lakers, and the Flyers lost to the New York Islanders both in six games.

#6, 1992, Bulls-Blackhawks

The Chicago Bulls and the Chicago Blackhawks both made it to the Finals in 1992.

The Bulls beat the Portland Trail Blazers in six games to win their second-straight championship. On the other hand, the Blackhawks were swept by the Pittsburgh Penguins.

#7, 1994, Rangers-Knicks

The New York Rangers and New York Knicks made it to the Finals again, but this time, the Rangers won it all, defeating the Vancouver Canucks in seven games.

The Knicks did not have the same faith, losing in six games to the Houston Rockets. This was one of the closest attempts for both NHL and NBA teams from the same city to win the championship in the same year.

#8, 2003, Nets-Devils

In 2003 the New Jersey Nets and New Jersey Devils both made it to the Finals.

The Nets lost to the San Antonio Spurs in six games, while the Devils won the Stanley Cup defeating Anaheim in seven.

#9, 2023, Heat-Panthers

Miami, Florida was the center of the sports world in 2023, as the Miami Heat and Florida Panthers both made it to the Finals.

It was a Cinderella run for the Heat and Panthers, who both reached the Finals as eighth seeds, but both ended up losing in five games.
