Minnesota Wild’s top 3 prospects to watch out for in 2024/25 season
The Minnesota Wild are a team in transition. They’ve missed the playoffs the last couple of seasons despite having a talented roster. But the club also needs an injection of youth to get back into the playoff conversation.
The good news is that the prospect pipeline for the Minnesota Wild looks good. The club should get the talented youth sooner rather than later.
With that in mind, here is a deeper look at the top three prospects to watch out for the Minnesota Wild in 2024-25.
Minnesota Wild’s top 3 prospects to watch out for in 2024/25
#3: Danila Yurov
The Minnesota Wild selected the Russian winger 24th overall in 2022. His skating ability is described as exceptional, while his strong physical presence allows him to reach the net to create opportunities. Yurov is known as a strong forechecker, making him a valuable asset in the offensive zone.
Yurov is expected to play this upcoming season in Russia. If all goes well, he should continue to develop while playing at a professional level. His 49 points in 62 games bode well for an eventual transition to North America.
For now, Wild fans will have to wait a bit longer to see Yurov in action. But his performance in Russia could accelerate his eventual arrival in Minnesota.
#2: Zeev Buium
Buium is the most recent first-round pick by the Minnesota Wild. The Wild were lucky to get Buium 12th overall this past draft, as he was projected to go higher. Many analysts are calling Buium the steal of the 2024 draft, given his selection at number 12.
Buium will be playing in the NCAA this upcoming season. As an 18-year-old, it makes sense that he hones his skills in the NCAA before making the leap to the NHL. Buium projects as a top-pairing defenseman. His intelligence and instincts, combined with his skills, make him one of the most exciting blueliners in the prospect pipeline.
Wild fans should expect Buium with the big club as early as 2025-26. While he may get a taste of pro hockey this upcoming season, don’t expect the Wild to rush Buium to the NHL.
#1: Jesper Wallstedt
Wallstedt projects as the Wild’s goalie of the future. While the club still has Marc-Andre Fleury and Filip Gustavsson on the team, Fleury is pushing 40 and Gustavsson is yet to earn the starting job outright.
As a first-round pick, Wallstedt comes with plenty of hype. But don’t expect to see him with the big club just yet. He should get a good look in training camp, but he should start the season in Iowa.
However, if injuries or inconsistency strike, expect Wallstedt to get the call to fill in. Last year’s sample size of three games paints an encouraging picture of what the Minnesota Wild hope Jesper Wallstedt can become.
