Nashville Predators’ top 3 prospects to watch out for in 2024/25 season
After a successful 2023-24 season, the Nashville Predators bolstered their lineup through massive free-agent signings. But that approach does not take away from the focus the club has on developing young talent.
The Nashville Predators are among the teams that have cultivated a strong talent pipeline, feeding the big club with plenty of solid prospects.
That being said, here’s a closer look at three Nashville Predators prospects to keep an eye on this upcoming season.
Nashville Predators’ top 3 prospects to watch out for in 2024/24
#3: Tanner Molendyk
The Nashville Predators selected Molendyk with the 24th pick in the 2023 NHL Draft. His explosive speed and smooth skating make him a dangerous force during transition play. At 6’0” and 180 pounds, Molendyk has enough size and physicality to tangle with the toughest blueliners in the league.
Last season, Molendyk put up impressive numbers with the Saskatoon Blades of the WHL. He registered 56 points in 50 games. This season, he is expected to go back to the WHL, while potentially transitioning to the AHL at some point.
Nashville Predators fans should keep in mind that Molendyk is just 19. So, it may be a couple of seasons before fans get to see the speedy winger carve up NHL defensemen.
#2: Matthew Wood
Wood was also part of the Nashville Predators’ 2023 NHL Draft class. At 19, Wood has already proven he’s got what it takes to be a productive NHL forward. In particular, his strong shot makes him dangerous from various spots on the ice.
Beyond strong shooting, Wood can also make smart passes and keep opposing defensemen off balance. His solid stickhandling abilities give him an edge when fighting off checkers.
Wood is committed to playing for the University of Minnesota in the NCAA this upcoming season. However, he may choose to turn pro sooner rather than later, after two strong seasons with the University of Connecticut.
#1: Yaroslav Askarov
Askarov is hands-down Nashville’s best prospect. As the 11th overall pick in 2020, Askarov joined the Predators’ organization with plenty of hype surrounding him, and he has not disappointed.
The Russian netminder put up impressive numbers in the AHL last season. In 44 games, he posted a 2.39 GAA with a .911 SV%. In two NHL games, Askarov registered a 1.47 GAA and .943 SV%.
His path to the NHL was clear until the Predators signed Juuse Saros to a massive contract extension. As such, Askarov should start the season in the AHL but may get a look later on in the season.
However, Askarov’s path to the NHL seems unclear at this point. With Saros firmly entrenched as the starter in Nashville, it’s possible that Askarov will become a highly coveted player for teams desperately seeking a solid starting goaltender.
