$38.5M Oilers star credits Connor McDavid for helping him tie Auston Matthews in scoring most goals last season
Zach Hyman had a special season for the Edmonton Oilers, and he's deflecting credit for it to Connor McDavid. He scored a ton of goals, marking himself as one of the league's top goal-scorers and an offensive threat, unlike many others.
A reporter asked how it felt for Hyman, who is worth $38.5 million on his contract, to tie for the lead in goals scored last season. Hyman had 54 regular season goals and 16 in the postseason for a total of 70. Auston Matthews scored 69 regular-season goals and one in the postseason.
"I don't know, I just went out there and played," Hyman said via TSN. "It kind of feels normal, which is crazy to say, but I play with the best player in the world. When he's passing to you, it makes it a lot easier to score goals. When you take it to another level with him, go to the net, and you don't just use your stick, you use your body too. He's pretty special."
Hyman gave all the credit to McDavid. He said the superstar's passing left him with plenty of makeable shots, and all he did was slot them home. The duo was instrumental in Edmonton's success in 2023-24, but Hyman would have people believe it was all McDavid.
Zach Hyman opens up on near-comeback in Stanley Cup Final
The Edmonton Oilers faced a nearly insurmountable 3-0 deficit in the Stanley Cup Final. Thanks to Connor McDavid (who won the Conn Smythe MVP award) and Zach Hyman, they battled all the way back. Ultimately, they fell by one goal in Game 7.
"The way that it went down for us, I would say the mental side [was more difficult than the physical] - being down 3-0 in the finals, working yourself back into the series and ultimately giving yourself a chance to win it and just falling short," Hyman said (via TSN).
He said the Oilers had originally felt as if the series wasn't over. They had a slight setback, but they were ready for the next game. Unfortunately, they all had to come to terms with what had actually transpired.
