$47.25M worth Ryan McDonagh relishes opportunity of returning with Tampa Bay Lightning
Ryan McDonagh is excited to return to the Tampa Bay Lightning. After being traded from the Nashville Predators on May 21, McDonagh returns to a team where he has made a big impact. The Lightning signed him to a seven-year, $47.25 million deal.
McDonagh won two Stanley Cups with the Lightning in 2020 and 2021. His strong performance during those seasons, including an NHL-high plus-18 rating in the 2021 playoffs, made him a key player.
McDonagh knows his new contract comes with big responsibilities. His base salary for the upcoming season will be $6.93 million, with a cap hit of $6.75 million, per Spotrac. He is focused on being ready for training camp. At Da Beauty League, he talked about physically and mentally preparing for the season.
“When an organization puts their faith back in you, that speaks a lot to me,” McDonagh said via (NHL.com). “So, you try to do what you can to be as prepared as you can and focus really hard on skating a lot, getting to the gym and just getting mentally prepared for a big role.”
He explained why Tampa Bay holds a special place in his heart:
“It’s a very special place for me and my family. Two of my kids were born there. Between that and winning, those were some big moments I had there. And it’s a great community."
"A great place to raise your kids and a great market to play hockey, with an organization that’s behind you. They’re always going to go for the Cup, so it’s fun to be a part of that again.”
Tampa Bay Lightning’s roster will be different this season
Tampa Bay Lightning’s key player Steven Stamkos moved to the Nashville Predators on Jul. 1. In his 16 seasons with Tampa Bay, Stamkos led in goals (555), points (1,137) and games (1,082). McDonagh acknowledged this change.
“That’s the business side of hockey,” McDonagh said. “Sometimes things don’t go according to the way you think it will. Specifically, for him, I can’t speak for him, but I’m sure he wanted to stay. But I know he’s thrilled about Nashville, too."
McDonagh looks forward to the new season. With stars like Nikita Kucherov and Brayden Point, he’s ready to help the team succeed.
