$68,000,000 Brock Faber reflects on going up against Connor McDavid and league’s biggest stars
Minnesota Wild defenseman Brock Faber signed an eight-year, $68,000,000 contract extension on Monday. This deal, starting in the 2025-26 season, will average $8.5 million annually.
On Tuesday, Spittin' Chiclets shared a video where the 21-year-old discussed his experience facing top NHL players in a conversation with Paul Bissonette. When asked what his "welcome to the NHL" moment was, Faber replied:
"It was going against Connor McDavid and Nathan MacKinnon. I mean, I just had a welcome-to-the-NHL moment against MacKinnon two weeks ago. He scored four goals against us."
This performance left a lasting impression on the defenseman, who also mentioned his encounters with Alexander Ovechkin, especially during penalty kills:
"But then Ovechkin is another one, where you're on the right D man on the side of the PK and you just stand in like this and it's like, 'Oh f**k, here we go. I am gonna have to eat this one.'"
Brock Faber talks about playing for Minnesota Wild after signing the contract
Brock Faber played all 82 games last season, scoring 47 points (eight goals, 39 assists). He led all rookies in ice time per game (24:58) and assists, and was tied for second in points. Faber finished second in Calder Trophy voting behind Connor Bedard. His points were the most by a rookie defenseman in Wild's history.
Talking about playing for the Wild after the extension, Faber said:
"I'm just grateful that we can take this step and I get to keep growing, keep learning, keep maturing for a long time here playing in Minnesota," Faber said (via NHL.com). "Again, there's no one who wanted to play for the Minnesota Wild more than myself, and it worked out that way. And it's incredible for me and my family. It's a dream come true, to say the least."
The defenseman was selected 45th overall by the Los Angeles Kings in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, and on Apr. 9, 2023, Brock Faber signed an entry-level contract with a playoff-bound Wild. Since then he has garnered 47 points in 84 regular-season games and no points in six playoff games.
