Accused in Johnny Gaudreau and brother's fatal hit-and-run crash indicted on 4 different charges: Report
The driver accused of fatally striking NHL star Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew in a hit-and-run crash while intoxicated has been indicted on 4 different charges.
On December 11, 2024, a grand jury indicted 43-year-old Sean Higgins on second-degree reckless vehicular homicide, first-degree aggravated manslaughter, fourth-degree tampering with physical evidence, and second-degree leaving the scene of a fatal accident.
The fatal crash occurred on August 29, 2024, in Oldmans Township, New Jersey. Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew were cycling northbound on County Route 551 when Higgins, driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee, attempted to illegally pass two vehicles by entering the southbound lane.
Higgins then tried passing an SUV that had moved to the middle of the road to safely pass the brothers. In doing so, Higgins struck the Gaudreau brothers, killing both.
Responding troopers noticed Higgins smelled of alcohol. He admitted to consuming five to six beers before driving. Sobriety tests showed Higgins was intoxicated over the legal limit with a .087 blood alcohol level.
The tampering charge alleges Higgins knowingly altered physical evidence, while the leaving the scene charge accuses him of failing to remain at the crash site. Higgins' arraignment is scheduled for January 7, 2025. If convicted of the severe charges, he faces extensive jail time.
Johnny Gaudreau's sister Katie remembers her favorite memory of her sibling
Johnny Gaudreau's sister Katie shared a heartwarming story on Instagram about one of her favorite memories with her brother. She recounted a chaotic yet hilarious night out during the summer in Princeton, New Jersey.
Katie explained how she, Johnny, Meredith, cousin Devin and herself all bought matching sweatshirts one night and went out to a bar. As a joke, Johnny pretended to get into a fake fight with Katie, but the bouncer misunderstood and tried to kick Johnny out.
“My favorite memory ever. One summer night…. John, Mer, Devin, and I bought matching sweatshirts (John obviously bought). John pretended to fake fight me at The P @princetonavnj . The bouncer went to kick him out not knowing it was a joke,” she wrote.
Katie immediately jumped to her brother's defense, crying and explaining it was just a joke between siblings. But the bouncer still kicked both of them out.
“I proceeded to cry (not surprised) and try to explain how we are brother and sister and were just joking, he didn’t care. I said to the bouncer ‘you kick him out… you kick me out’… well he kicked me out.”
Even though Meredith and Devin were annoyed by their antics, the group decided to crash their other sister Kristen's friend's bachelorette party in Sea Isle City. Despite the earlier drama, Katie said it turned into one of the best nights ever with her brother Johnny Gaudreau.
