Adam Johnson death: Man arrested on suspicion of manslaughter re-bailed till January 2025

It has been two years since former hockey star Adam Johnson died. The man who was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter has officially been re-bailed until January 2025.

At the time, Johnson was playing for the Nottingham Panthers. He suffered a fatal neck injury from a skate after colliding with Sheffield Steelers star Matt Petgrave in October 2023.

He was quickly transported to the hospital in Sheffield but was pronounced dead. The examination confirmed that it was the neck injury that killed him.

Inspector Benjamin Wood said via BBC:

"We have been working meticulously to fully understand the unprecedented circumstances in which Adam sadly lost his life," Wood said on Monday. "This complex investigation into Adam's death remains ongoing and we are continuing to work closely with the Crown Prosecution Service. Our thoughts remain wholeheartedly with Adam's family at this time."

The former Pittsburgh Penguins center's tragic passing shocked the hockey world, especially those who witnessed it. The event unfolded in front of thousands of fans watching the Nottingham-Sheffield game.

Coroner asked for neck guards in wake of Adam Johnson death

Adam Johnson's death was a major point in hockey history. He previously played in the NHL, but his death impacted the sport in all countries and leagues. After the examination revealed that the neck injury was what killed him, the coroner asked for change.

Sheffield coroner Tanyka Rawden officially suspended her investigation. After a re-bail, they still have not completed all the proceedings.

Reports later confirmed that Rawden issued a Prevention of Future Deaths Report to Ice Hockey United Kingdom and the English Ice Hockey Association. In it, she advocated for the mandatory use of neckguards in hockey.

Johnson's death was tragic and unfortunate, but nothing in the sport at the time could have prevented it since hockey players' necks have always been one of the only exposed parts of their bodies. That is what pushed Rawden to make her request.
