Alex Ovechkin responds to being asked if he has over $100,000,000 in earnings from 19-year hockey career
Washington Capitals superstar Alex Ovechkin has made and broken a good many records across his illustrious career in the NHL. He has also made an impressive fortune from lucrative player contracts over the course of almost two decades.
During a recent appearance on blogger Amiran Sardarov’s podcast, Oveckhin opened up about the amount of money he has made from his playing career. When asked about his total career earnings, the Great Eight replied:
“I don’t even know [how much money and assets I have].”
To date, Alex Ovechkin has made around $150.7 million from NHL contracts over the 19 seasons he has played for the Washington Capitals in the NHL, according to Spotrac. He is currently on a five-year, $47.5 million contract that lasts until the end of the 2025-26 season.
However, when asked if he has accumulated over $100 million in earnings, Ovi said:
“Of course not. How? There are taxes. If I had 100 million, I would be relaxing and drinking beer right now.”
Ovechkin also mentioned that he looks forward to moving back to his hometown in Russia after his NHL career is over. He fondly recalled his friends, family and neighbors and shared that they miss Russia when he is playing in the US.
Alex Ovechkin confirmed investing in real estate
Alex Ovechkin’s love for automobiles is widely known and he had once claimed that it had been his ‘main hobby’ since as early as 2013. However, the Great Eight has also invested widely in the real estate sector.
While speaking with Amiran Sardarov in the same podcast, Ovi mentioned that he has bought two real estate properties in the States and more in his hometown.
“Yes, [I invest in real estate],” Ovechkin said. “[In Russia], of course. We bought an apartment in Miami four years ago. I have a house in Washington. If I had planned to live there [the States], I would have invested and bought there. And, in Russia, both for myself and for investments.”
He also shared that he was investing in a new real estate project back in his hometown. Ovechkin said:
“I’m building a new house, in the Moscow region. I hope we’ll move next year. A normal little house. I won’t say how many square meters. Why do I need to know? I’ll invite you to visit. You’ll leave the camera outside the house.”
The Capitals captain has two more seasons left in his five-year extension with the team. Next season could see the Great Eight take down Wayne Gretzky’s all-time scoring record in the NHL.
