Anthony Cirelli escaped on neighbor's canoe from Davis Islands home owing to Hurricane Helene mayhem
While the Tampa Bay Lightning continue their exhibition schedule, several areas in the Southeastern United States are in an emergency situation due to the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene.
As of now, several sporting events have been postponed, including several collegiate events.
The Lightning have been forced to postpone their matchup against the Nashville Predators, originally scheduled for September 27 at Amalie Arena. The game has now been rescheduled for October 7; it will still take place in the Bolts' home venue.
In the meantime, one member of the Lightning has been personally affected by the Hurricane. Forward Anthony Cirelli, who lives on Davis Islands, evacuated along with his dog Max with the use of a neighbor's canoe.
“He has pretty big Jeep," Cirelli said. "I think, actually, most of it was underwater so I'm surprised it even started this morning. He was nice enough to trek through the river that was my street to come and grab me so I could make it here for the practice."
"In good spirits, thankful that everyone was safe, and hope everyone out there looked after themselves. There are bigger things than hockey sometimes so praying for everyone out there that everyone is OK.”
The Lightning released a statement for their fans
In their announcement to the fans who had been planning on attending the game, the Lightning indicated that everyone who had tickets would be able to attend the re-scheduled date of October 7.
"All tickets for tonight's game will be honored on the rescheduled date. Single-game ticket holders seeking refunds should contact their original point of purchase for assistance."
Cirelli, who was taken with the 72nd overall selection by the Lightning in the 2015 NHL Draft, was a key member of their back-to-back Stanley Cup victories in 2020 and 2021.
In 431 career games played, all with Tampa Bay, he's scored 97 goals with 136 assists while adding another 17 goals and 25 assists in 103 career postseason games.
The Lightning management rewarded him with an eight-year, $50 million extension in the offseason of 2022. While his teammates Mikael Sergachev and Erik Cernak also received eight-year contract extensions the same, day, Sergachev now plays for the Utah Hockey Club.
The Lightning will continue their exhibition schedule by meeting the Predators at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena on Saturday night; game time is scheduled for 8:00 PM EST.
