Anthony Stolarz injury: Leafs GM Brad Treliving provides concerning update on star goalie's MRI results
The Toronto Maple Leafs received bad news about Anthony Stolarz on Tuesday. An MRI revealed a "pebble" in his knee, and GM Brad Treliving confirmed he will be out for at least one month.
Head coach Craig Berube initially hoped Stolarz might be back on the ice the following week, but that won't happen now.
The Leafs will have to rely on Joseph Woll, who has his own troubling injury history. Stolarz was playing so much because Woll was out to start the season and the backup did so well.
Now, Woll will be the main goalie, and Toronto will presumably also use Dennis Hildeby again. Hildeby, their top goalkeeping prospect, played some during Woll's absence at the beginning of the year. Hildeby has already played and won a game since Stolarz's injury.
Former head coach Sheldon Keefe, now with the New Jersey Devils, commended Stolarz after a loss, saying the goalie, who had 38 saves, was part of the "best goaltending" in the league. That will now be put to the test with Stolarz on the injured reserve.
Stolarz has appeared in 17 games so far and boasts a 9-5-2 record with a .927 save percentage and 2.15 goals-against average this year.
Leafs goalie speaks on depth after Anthony Stolarz's injury
The Maple Leafs have had good goaltending depth all year, something that will again be put to the test without Anthony Stolarz. The goalkeeper is set to miss up to six weeks.
Joseph Woll, now the number one goalie again, said via The Leafs Nation:
“All the goalies we have in our organization are really good dudes. I think that’s important because you’re competing for the net, but at the end of the day, you’re on the same team, and you’re all trying to win for the team.”
He said the goalies have to take things day by day, especially now that he and Dennis Hildeby will presumably see more playing time with Stolarz down.
