"At his age, it can't be a rebuild": Top NHL insider speculates Ken Holland's future after Oilers exit

Ken Holland left the Edmonton Oilers last offseason. After piloting them to within one game of the Stanley Cup victory, he left and was replaced by Stan Bowman. Holland is a longtime executive and is 68 years old, but one NHL insider believes that retirement isn't necessarily in his initial plan.

Darren Dreger of TSN said:

"Well, what we’re hearing here is that he’s open to anything. You’re right, I think most of us thought that Kenny Holland may just fade into retirement, maybe take a consulting role or an advisory role, and he might be open to one of those positions on a short-term basis. He’s also open to not doing a whole heck of a lot other than playing golf over the course of this year."

Dreger added that Holland still has "tons of energy" and is still "motivated by the juice of the game," but he needs the right fit moving forward. He added:

"So I look at hockey operations bosses in Canada, like Jimmy Rutherford in Vancouver, what about Jeff Gorton of the Montreal Canadiens. I think Kenny Holland would be keenly interested in a job like that. Maybe another GM opportunity. But at his age, it can’t be a rebuild."

Dreger finished by saying that Holland definitely wants to work again and doesn't want to drift off into retirement.

Oilers CEO thanked Ken Holland for his contributions

After the Edmonton Oilers' season ended, which came on a 2-1 loss in Game 7 to the Florida Panthers, the team and GM Ken Holland decided to part ways. They had been together for five seasons.

Per ESPN, Oilers president and CEO Jeff Jackson said Holland had not only turned the Oilers into one of the NHL's best teams but also "established a deeply rooted foundation of success and a culture of winning."

He added:

"That will continue well into the future. Thanks in large part for Ken's outstanding work, Edmonton has become a destination city for players around the National Hockey League."

There had been questions about Holland's future before then, and they ultimately went separate ways. Stan Bowman, one of the architects behind the Chicago Blackhawks' three most recent NHL titles, was brought in to replace Holland.
