NY Rangers welcomed a coaching change in May after missing the playoffs
The Rangers are making changes after missing the playoffs. They hired Mike Sullivan as their new coach. Sullivan replaces Peter Laviolette, who was fired after two seasons. The Rangers had a disappointing year, finishing six points out of a playoff spot.
Sullivan coached the Pittsburgh Penguins for 10 years. He won Stanley Cups in 2016 and 2017. He also worked for the NYR as an assistant from 2009 to 2013. Chris Drury said Sullivan was the right choice to lead the team.
"Mike Sullivan has established himself as one of the premier head coaches in the NHL," Drury said via NHL.com in early May. "Given his numerous accomplishments throughout his coaching career -- including two Stanley Cups and leading Team USA at the international level -- Mike brings a championship-level presence behind the bench."
Sullivan has vast coaching experience as he has coached in the NHL and at the international level. He will coach Team USA at the 2026 Olympics. With Sullivan behind the bench, they hope to get back into the playoffs.
