"Best chance we've had here"- Hurricanes' Sebastian Aho reflects on team's playoff exit after 5-3 loss to Rangers
The Carolina Hurricanes' journey in the NHL playoffs came to an end after a close series against the New York Rangers. Sebastian Aho reflected on their playoff exit during a media press conference following their 5-3 loss to the Rangers.
"It definitely, in my opinion, was the best chance we've had here. I really thought we had the team, It was a very exciting time to feel that we really had a chance.
"I really thought until the end that this was the team that could go over that hump and go all the way ... This one hurts, for sure," Aho said
Carolina's journey in the playoffs was marked by highs and lows. They rebounded from a 3-1 deficit, winning two straight games to force a Game 6 against the Rangers. However, their efforts were ultimately unsuccessful.
The turning point came in the third period during the crucial Game 6 matchup. Chris Kreider delivered a stunning hat trick, propelling the Rangers into the Eastern Conference Final. Despite their best efforts, the Carolinas couldn't contain Kreider's offensive skills in the final moments of the game.
Vincent Trocheck and Barclay Goodrow also contributed, with Goodrow's empty-net goal sealing the win. Igor Shesterkin's goaltending played a crucial role in preserving the Rangers' lead.
Despite a good effort, the Hurricanes fell short. They missed crucial scoring opportunities late in the game.
Carolina Hurricanes extend Rod Brind’Amour’s contract
Rod Brind’Amour agreed to a five-year extension to continue coaching the Carolina Hurricanes, per a league source.
Carolina's president and general manager, Don Waddell, confirmed earlier that the team intended to extend Brind’Amour's contract, expressing confidence in his commitment to the organization.
“We’re gonna get it done, I’m not worried about it. He wants to be a Hurricane for life,” Waddell said.
Brind’Amour, along with assistant coaches Jeff Daniels and Tim Gleason, also received contract extensions.
Carolina recorded three straight 50-win seasons under Brind'Amour's leadership, the first time in franchise history. Brind'Amour's Hurricanes have won at least one playoff round in five of his six seasons as coach.
Brind’Amour was recognized with the Jack Adams Trophy in 2020–21. As a former player, Brind’Amour led the Hurricanes to their only Stanley Cup victory.
He earned accolades for his performance as a defensive forward. With Brind’Amour staying in Carolina and Craig Berube joining Toronto, four coaching positions remain vacant in the NHL, with interim coaching in place for the Los Angeles Kings.
