Biz makes his feelings known about Mitch Marner for $55,500,000 Avs forward trade floated by co-panelist
Paul Bissonnette was quick to shut down the idea of trading Mitch Marner after his NHL on TNT co-panelist Anson Carter proposed a swap between the Toronto Maple Leafs star and the Colorado Avalanche's Mikko Rantanen. Carter floated the potential trade during the first intermission of the Vegas Golden Knights-Avs game on Wednesday.
Carter suggested that with Nathan MacKinnon's big contract in Colorado, the team may have issues fitting in a new deal for Rantanen, who is in the final year of his 6-year, $55,500,000 contract.
His logic was that Toronto could theoretically pay Rantanen more than the Avs could, while Colorado would get an excellent player in Mitch Marner who wouldn't demand more than MacKinnon.
However, Biz simply said:
"I would say no trade. I believe in Marner.”
However, Bissonnette pointed out that the Avalanche were able to win the Stanley Cup in the 2022-23 season without elite goaltending from Darcy Kuemper. Although Kuemper struggled at times, putting up modest regular season numbers, Colorado still prevailed.
Bissonnette argued that the Avs could take a similar approach this season, relieving some pressure on starting goalie Alexandar Georgiev with a quality backup.
“I think if they can get him a little bit of time to hit the reset button, I think that they can get that goaltending from Georgiev, and maybe if they can go get a responsible backup to help relieve a little bit that pressure right now, that would be a short-term solution, but I believe in Georgiev."
As for Toronto, Bissonnette made it clear he was against any Mitch Marner trade.
"No, we're not moving Marner. Stop the nonsense, stop it.”
The 27-year-old winger has been a star for the Maple Leafs, currently leading the team in assists with 20 to go along with 9 goals through 22 games.
Anson Carter's rationale for proposing Mitch Marner trade
Mitch Marner is entering the final year of his six-year, $65.41 million contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs and will become an unrestricted free agent after the 2024-25 season.
Carter noted that Marner has faced criticism in Toronto for his lack of goal-scoring in the playoffs.
"If I'm the Leafs, I would definitely think about I mean, listen, I love Marner, and people up in Toronto give him a hard time the postseason. This postseason has been that bad. He's been creating some offense. He just hasn't scored goals." Carter said.
"So I like Marner, but are you going to pay him what he's worth up in Toronto? I don't know if they're going to listen." he added.
In Carter's view, the Leafs may be better off trading Mitch Marner in order to get assets in return, rather than potentially losing him for nothing in free agency.
