Boston Bruins GM Don Sweeney speaks out contract stalemate with Jeremy Swayman

Boston Bruins GM Don Sweeney discussed the ongoing contract issues with goalie Jeremy Swayman on Wednesday. The Bruins are set to kick off the 2024-25 season against the Florida Panthers on October 8, but a deal with Swayman has not been finalized yet.

Swayman must sign a contract by December 1 to play this season. In August, an arbitrator awarded him a $3.475 million contract.

Sweeney expressed disappointment that a deal hasn't been finalized yet, but he remains hopeful. Sweeney said (per NHL.com):

"He has chosen to wait, and rightfully so, until a contract is settled," Sweeney said per NHL.com. "It's our intention to continue to negotiate a contract. I'm disappointed that when you set things as a priority in the general manager spot that you do your best to try and accomplish that and I haven't been able to do that yet."

Swayman, a restricted free agent, will not join the team until his contract is settled. Sweeney acknowledged that this delay affects both Swayman and the team’s preparation for the season.

"At the end of the day I'm optimistic because I think we'll find a landing spot before December 1st," Sweeney added.

Sweeney clarified that recent reports about a lack of contact with Swayman's camp and finalized contracts are incorrect.

Previously Jeremy Swayman was confident about signing an extension

Previously in the second half of May, Swayman said that he wanted a long-term deal with Boston. He did not go for arbitration in the hope of finalizing a contract as both parties were willing.

"I'm confident that my agent and I and management will figure out the details this summer," Swayman said. (per NHL.com) "I'm looking forward to it."

Last season, he had a $3.475 million contract. His strong performance, including a 2.53 GAA and .916 save percentage in the regular season, and a 2.15 GAA and .933 save percentage in the playoffs, indicates his new contract will likely be higher.

Coach Jim Montgomery on Jeremy Swayman

Coach Jim Montgomery said that while Jeremy Swayman’s absence is not ideal, the team is focused on training camp and preparing for the season opener.

"Right now, no. There's not a fear of that," Montgomery said (per NHL.com) "Just because right now we're focused on training camp, getting ready for Game 1 (of the season) in Florida and the process. We've got a lot of day-to-day things that we've got to focus on right now."

With Linus Ullmark traded, Jeremy Swayman is expected to be the Bruins' starting goalie. Until then, Joonas Korpisalo and prospect Brandon Bussi will be the team’s goaltenders.
