"Brotherhood": Johnny Gaudreau's wife Meredith reacts to heart-touching Blue Jacket's No. 13 tribute

The Columbus Blue Jackets honored Johnny Gaudreau with a special tribute at Nationwide Arena on Tuesday. Players, including Johnny’s best friend Sean Monahan, wore special jerseys.

The jerseys featured the team’s signature cannon image encircled by the team name, with a dark blue and white design. A striking addition was the No. 13, prominently placed near the left side of the chest, commemorating Johnny Gaudreau’s jersey number.

Johnny’s wife, Meredith, shared the tribute photos on Instagram. She wrote:

“I love these guys so much. Brotherhood,” with a blue heart.

Johnny and his brother Matthew passed away in a tragic bicycle accident on Aug. 29. The crash happened in Oldmans Township, New Jersey, near their hometown in Salem County. They were in town to serve as groomsmen at their sister’s wedding. The accident was caused by a suspected drunk driver, who was charged with two counts of death by auto.

Johnny is survived by Meredith and their two children, Noa and Johnny Jr. Meredith shared during Johnny’s memorial that their family was expecting another baby.

Earlier this season, the Blue Jackets also honored Johnny during their home opener on Oct. 15. Both teams wore his number 13 during warmups, and the arena displayed a memorial locker with his jerseys. Meredith attended the game with their children and called it a meaningful experience.

"Thank you to our entire Columbus Blue Jackets family for such a beautiful night celebrating our favorite guy 💙. NWA was our second home as a family and a place I still feel close to John. I could see in Noa’s eyes that she can feel it too," Meredith wrote.

Meredith's 'hockey sisters' also supported a bracelet fundraiser in memory of Johnny and Matthew. The fundraiser raised over $20,000 for the Gaudreau Brothers Foundation.

Meredith Gaudreau thanked the Calgary Flames for honoring Johnny Gaudreau

On Dec. 8, Meredith Gaudreau shared a message after the Calgary Flames honored Johnny Gaudreau, during a 3-0 win over Columbus. Johnny was named the game’s First Star. His father, Guy Gaudreau, stepped on the rink as his name was announced and waved to the crowd.

Meredith tweeted:

“Surprise ending to a really special night. I miss watching John play so much. Being at games is hard but love supporting his teammates and friends ♥️ my first star every single day forever,” Meredith tweeted on Saturday.

Johnny played for Calgary for eight seasons before joining the Blue Jackets in 2022.
