Bruins HC Jim Montgomery short on answers while addressing third-period collapse in OT loss to Sens
The Boston Bruins fell 3-2 in overtime to the Ottawa Senators on Saturday night at TD Garden. This loss dropped the Bruins to 7-7-2 on the regular season.
The loss showcased the Bruins' ongoing offensive struggles, as they managed just 16 shots compared to Ottawa's 34. After the defeat, Bruins coach Jim Montgomery offered few answers in a brief 91-second press conference.
"Our lack of execution on the power play was not good enough to generate any kind of scoring chances," Montgomery said post-game. "I don't know if that fed into the third period and our lack of a better choice of words, intensity."
Montgomery made clear the Bruins need to address their power play issues.
"Talk about it. We'll look at what we're doing sports science-wise, and we'll come up with answers. ..." Montgomery said. "Right now, I don't have an answer for you."
He believes that conditioning is not the cause of the team's struggles. He concluded his press briefing by asking the media members to speculate on the reasons for the defeat and acknowledging that the team didn't perform up to par.
Pavel Zacha and Brad Marchand scored for the Bruins, while Josh Norris, Michael Amadio and Brady Tkachuk for the Senators. Linus Ullmark saved 14 shots, while Bruins Jeremy Swayman stopped 31 shots in the loss.
Bruins captain Brad Marchand on OT loss to Senators
After the Bruins' disappointing 3-2 overtime loss to the Senators, captain Brad Marchand didn't mince words when assessing his team's performance.
"We have to look internally and understand we need to be accountable and better in areas throughout the game ...", Marchand said. "We need to expect more from ourselves. I don't think you can point at Xs and Os. It's got to come from will and determination at this point."
Marchand admitted the Bruins haven't been reaching their potential lately. He noted that things don’t always go as planned, emphasizing the importance of taking it day by day.
"We want to try to improve everyday, but it’s just not happening right now.” He added.
The Bruins next face the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday.
