Cale Makar injury: Avs HC Jared Bednar addresses D-man's early exit
Colorado Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar suffered an undisclosed injury during Tuesday's 6-3 win over the Seattle Kraken. He initially exited the ice during a powerplay in the second period but returned afterward in the final period. However, Makar left the ice again after speaking with a team trainer. It appeared to be a non-contact injury.
Notably, during his final final shift before heading to the locker room, Makar seemed to injure his right leg. In the post-game conference, head coach Jared Bednar addressed Cale Makar's early exit, stating:
"He tweaked something late in the second. He wasn't able to continue."
The Avalanche are already dealing with injuries to several key players. For now, Makar's status is day to day. He played 14 shifts and logged 15:09 of ice time before leaving the game on Tuesday.
Cale Makar extended his point streak to 13 games
Before exiting the game, Cale Makar recorded two assists and extended his point streak to 13 games. Chris Wagner opened the scoring for the Avalanche, putting them ahead 1-0 at 2:28 of the first period.
The Kraken responded with Jared Schwartz tying the game 1-1 at 12:58. Ivan Ivan's goal restored the Avalanche's lead to 2-1 before heading into the second period. Jared McCann tied it 2-2 just 23 seconds into the second period on the powerplay.
Goals from Artturi Lehkonen and Mikko Rantanen gave the Avalanche a 4-2 lead. In the final period, Matty Beniers scored for the Kraken to make it 4-3.
However, goals from Rantanen (empty net) and Nikolai Kovalenko secured a comfortable 6-3 win for the Avalanche. Nathan MacKinnon accumulated assists on the night.
“It was good. I liked our game right from the get-go,” Bednar said after the game via NHL.com. “I thought we were engaged, we were skating, we were aggressive, disciplined and we had a real strong commitment to defend the right way.
"So, I liked the game tonight, and then we were able to finally put some pucks in the net.”
With the win, the Avalanche snapped a three-game skid. The club currently sits sixth in the Central Division with 12 points and is 21st in the league standings. They'll travel to Canada Life Center to face the league-toppers, the Winnipeg Jets (12-1-0) on Thursday. The puck drops at 8 p.m. ET.
