Calgary Flames new arena: Completion date and other key details we know about Scotia Place complex
Calgary's sports scene is getting a boost with the Scotia Place complex, a new arena for the NHL’s Calgary Flames. Construction of this venue began after the groundbreaking on July 22, 2024 in Calgary, Alberta. It can accommodate up to 18,400 fans and is set to open for the 2027-28 season.
Scotia Place replaces the old CalgaryNEXT plan, which included changes to the Scotiabank Saddledome and McMahon Stadium. The revamped design is inspired by a “fire and ice” theme that alludes to Calgary’s heritage and its indigenous roots.
The arena is projected to be a modern landmark with bars, restaurants and retail shops. City councilor Sonya Sharp says it will be a key part of Calgary’s sports and entertainment scene, thus marking a new era for the city.
On Wednesday, Bill Johnson from HOK’s Sports, Recreation and Entertainment division noted the building's role as a community gathering place.
“I think the best buildings tell stories and narratives. It was important for us to come up with a story that resonated with this place,” Bill said via Parametric Architecture. “We came up with a fairly direct idea that this is a meeting place, and this was the birthplace of this community, and people gathered around the fire, and what better building type than a building that was designed to bring people together?”
Calgary Flames extend Dustin Wolf's contract for two years
Calgary Flames extended goaltender Dustin Wolf’s contract for two years, starting with a two-way deal and moving to a one-way contract in the second year. The average annual value is $850,000.
The California-native, who was drafted in the 7th round by the Flames back in 2019, had a solid 2023-24 season. He played 17 games and earned a 7-7-1 record. He ended the season with four straight wins. From mid-March, he tied for the most wins among rookie goalies and was second in saves with 256.
In the AHL, Wolf also performed well. He finished the season with a .922 save percentage, a 20-12-7 record and four shutouts that helped the Pacific Division win the 2024 AHL All-Star Classic.
Wolf previously led the AHL in wins, shutouts and save percentage in the 2022-23 season, and subsequently won the MVP award.
