Canadian PM Justin Trudeau lauds Indo-Canadian Sikh Vancouver Canucks forward's first NHL goal

Vancouver Canucks rookie Arshdeep Bains got a shoutout from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau after a thrilling first goal as a professional hockey player. Bains was born in 2001 to an Indo-Canadian Sikh family in Canada. Tons of people congratulated the player, but perhaps none more prominent than Trudeau.

The Prime Minister took to X to respond to a post highlighting the player's accomplishment. He wrote:

"A hometown hero in the making. Congrats on your first NHL goal, Arshdeep!"

The 23-year-old forward found himself on a loose puck in Pittsburgh Penguins territory during the second period. He dropped a pass to Daniel Sprong, whose shot was denied by the goalie, but the puck bounced off and landed in front of Bains.

He made the tap-in to an open net for an easy but exhilarating first goal. That proved to be the winning goal and his first, a monumental occasion for Bains and the team.

Vancouver Canucks discuss Arshdeep Bains' first goal

Arshdeep Bains had been told by several of his Vancouver Canucks teammates that they expected him to score sooner rather than later. He made good on their expectations against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

He said, via The Canadian Press:

"I'd been hearing that from a couple guys. They're all pretty happy for me. And it almost felt like it was meant to be."

The winger added:

“I can't really even put it in the words. It just happened so fast and all the guys were so happy. It's just a special moment."

Fellow winger Kiefer Sherwood lamented the fact that Bains wasn't more ecstatic after scoring:

"I wish he had a bigger smile on his goal. But you see the guys' reaction on the bench — I think we were happier than he was. But he's been a guy that's just put his nose down and continue to go to work. … So it really, really feels good for everyone to kind of support him and watch him go about his thing.”

The win continued a hot start for the Canucks, who moved to 4-1-2 on the season. They face the Carolina Hurricanes next and will look to build off their and Bains' momentum.
