Canadiens GM Kent Hughes addresses rumors of Habs brass meeting Rangers HC Gerard Gallant

On Monday, NHL insider Luc Gelinas spoke about Montreal Canadiens GM Kent Hughes and rumors of a meeting with Gerard Gallant. Hughes shared that he had dinner with head coach Martin St-Louis and Adam Nicholas in Toronto but did not meet with Gallant.

"The last time I saw Gerard was at the NHL Awards when he won Coach of the Year," Gelinas tweeted on X, formerly Twitter.

Gallant has coached the Florida Panthers, Vegas Golden Knights and Rangers. He was also an assistant coach with the Canadiens from 2012 to 2014. Though Gallant is experienced, he doesn’t speak French, which is often important in Montreal.

Gallant is still under contract with the Rangers, so the Canadiens should make a deal to hire him.

Gerard Gallant expressed his interest in coaching again

According to a report from the NHL in January, Gerard Gallant said he was open to coaching again. He last coached the New York Rangers in the 2022-23 season. After being let go following a first-round playoff loss, Gallant spent time with family.

"I think people know (I'm available)," Gallant said to NHL.com. "I'm only 60 years old. They know I want to coach again so if the opportunity comes up, I'd be happy to. We'll see where it goes. I have no idea what's going to happen, but I'm enjoying my time home with my family now.

Gallant was 369-262-4-70 while coaching for the Panthers, Golden Knights and Rangers. He won the Jack Adams Award in 2017-18 with the Golden Knights.

"I'm waiting, I'm hoping, you know, if something comes up," Gallant said per NHL.com. "Obviously, I'd like to be coaching again in the National Hockey League but we'll see. I haven't talked to anybody, and I'm not waiting by the phone. If the phone rings, I'll be very happy, but I'm not sitting, waiting."

He said he would also consider an assistant role. Gallant enjoyed working with young players at the CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game.

“There’s skill, there’s talent. They’re the next NHL players,” he said.

Although Gallant is ready to coach, he's not actively seeking opportunities. He was also considered for coaching over the summer but nothing materialized.
