Canadiens HC Martin St. Louis makes his expectations from Habs squad extremely clear after OT loss to Flames
Montreal Canadiens coach Martin St. Louis minced no words following a 3-2 overtime loss to the Calgary Flames on Tuesday night. The defeat dropped the Canadiens to 4-7-2 on the season after four straight losses.
St. Louis made it clear that he was far from pleased with his team's effort and competitiveness as he also bemoaned the Canadiens' profligacy.
"I don't think we had any passengers tonight. I thought the guys had the right intentions, mindset, stuff that we've been talking about. It's a game of inches," said St. Louis post-game.
"We go offside. We also had good chances in the 3rd (period) to put the game away. We just missed. A little bit of finishing could help us win, but I liked what we were doing on the other side of the puck."
He wants his players to build off this performance and come back hungrier in their next game.
"Hungry. I want them to leave this game hungry, and if I was in their shoes, I'd wish we played tomorrow - that's what I want them to feel like, that's what I want to be like," St. Louis added.
Joel Armia and Brendan Gallagher scored for Montreal, while Matt Coronato (twice) and Connor Zary did so for the Flames. Goaltenders Dustin Wolf stopped 21 shots, while Sam Montembeault stopped 33 shots in the loss.
Canadiens' Brendan Gallagher reflects on loss to the Flames
Montreal forward Brendan Gallagher expressed his frustration after the game, as the Canadiens blew a third-period lead.
Gallagher acknowledged that the team is in a challenging position but emphasized the importance of maintaining focus.
"Right now we're fighting; we're searching for results. We're working hard, but it's not easy. This is a tough league. Once we figure it out, we'll be better off, but we can't let too much time go by," Gallagher said post-game.
"There's a slim margin between winning and losing in this league. When you have a lead in the third, at home, it should be a situation where you're able to lock it down," he added.
Montreal next faces the New Jersey Devils on Thursday at the Prudential Center.
