Canadiens' Lane Hutson discloses Martin St. Louis' blunt message after his costly turnover in loss to Rangers
Rookie defenseman Lane Hutson had a tough lesson during the Montreal Canadiens' 7-2 loss against the New York Rangers on Tuesday. Hutson's costly turnover led directly to a Rangers goal, putting the Habs in a difficult position during the game.
The 20-year-old Hutson acknowledged the mistake was a big goal for the Rangers and put his team in a bad spot.
He said in an interview with TSN:
"You never wanna put your team in that position. You know its a big goal for them and really in the game, so its huge to learn from and you wanna say it will never happen again, but you gotta keep playing and keep working so, yeah, hopefully never happens again."
After the turnover, head coach Martin St. Louis had a blunt message for the young player on the bench.
"I let him know it was a really bad play and he just told me 'don't hide away from it, you just gotta go out and play' so it's good to hear but I gotta be a lot better for all the guys in here," Lane Hutson revealed.
The Canadiens have played seven games this season and Hutson have a -4 rating in two of them. The rookie is determined to take this as a learning experience and avoid repeating the mistake in the future.
Martin St. Louis' comments about Lane Hutson's turnover
Martin St. Louis spoke about rookie defenseman Lane Hutson's costly turnover to the media after practice on Wednesday. St. Louis acknowledged that mistakes like that are part of the learning process:
"This league will humble you as a team and this league will humble you as a player."
While the turnover led directly to a Rangers goal, St. Louis did not seem overly concerned:
"Am I concerned? No. We have several good reps with him that we can teach off of."
He explained that Hutson has had several good performances that the coaching staff can use as teaching moments. The veteran coach sees value in analyzing both the good and bad from young players like Hutson.
The Canadiens will look to bounce back from the tough loss when they take on the St. Louis Blues on Saturday.
