Capitals HC Spencer Carbery admits they "underestimated" Penguins in 4-2 loss
The Washington Capitals lost 4-2 against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday night at Capital One Arena. The defeat drops the Capitals' record to 9-4-0 for the season.
Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery admitted that his team had underestimated the Penguins' intensity and competitiveness, especially in the opening period.
"We were not good to start," Carbery said via NHL.com. "You could tell that we potentially underestimated how competitive the game was going to be in that first 20 minutes, and then we got caught up in the second and figured it out. But you spot two, so we're chasing the game from the start."
The Penguins scored two first-period goals from Erik Karlsson and Michael Bunting. The Capitals tied the game with goals from Andrew Mangiapane and Rasmus Sandin. However, Pittsburgh sealed the win with goals from Noel Acciari and Evgeni Malkin in the final period.
Capitals goaltender Charlie Lindgren made 27 saves, echoed his coach's assessment.
"Obviously, they're a desperate hockey team," Lindgren said. "They need to stack up some wins. And even if it was a back-to-back [for them], you couldn't tell. Right from the get-go,you could tell they had their legs and you could see how much this game meant to them."
Washington will look to rebound when they face the St. Louis Blues at Enterprise Center on Saturday.
Mike Sullivan's comments after the Penguins' 4-2 win against the Capitals
Following the Penguins' 4-2 victory over Washington, head coach Mike Sullivan praised his team's effort and leadership in the bounce-back win.
"I give our leadership group credit. They led the charge," Sullivan said. "But we got contributions up and down the lineup. It's a great blueprint for a team game and what we can bring to the table, and we can be a whole lot harder to play against, and I thought we did that in the third period."
Sullivan highlighted Evgeni Malkin's line scoring a critical goal and complimented all four lines for playing well in the comeback effort.
"It was a complete effort in the third, for sure," Sullivan remarked.
The Penguins next face the Dallas Stars on Monday at PPG Paints Arena.
