Capitals' Jakob Chychrun hails 'brave' Robert F Kennedy Jr. amid reports of him dropping out of Presidential race
Washington Capitals defenseman Jakob Chychrun showed support on Instagram for Robert F. Kennedy Jr. who is reportedly considering dropping out of the 2024 presidential race.
Chychrun posted a picture of Kennedy and praised him in his caption.
"Thank you to the brave RFK jr for trying to bring the country closer together #unite @robertfkennedyjr"
The caption included inspirational quotes from Kennedy about uniting the country, with Chychrun writing,
"Are we willing to extend a hand across the divide? Are we ready to renew ourselves as ONE nation?"
This social media endorsement from the NHL star comes amid reports that Kennedy is likely ending his presidential bid this week. As per ABC News, Kennedy intends to drop out and endorse Donald Trump. Though, Kennedy himself has declined to confirm or deny this.
Kennedy, the son of U.S. Attorney general and senator Robert F. Kennedy, had been considering a bid for the presidency in 2024. However, it appears he has decided against pursuing the Republican nomination.
Washington Capitals GM on acquiring Jakob Chychrun
The Washington Capitals made a major move in July to bolster their defense by acquiring Jakob Chychrun from the Ottawa Senators in exchange for defenseman Nick Jensen and their 2026 third-round pick.
After obtaining Chychrun, Washington Capitals GM Brian MacLellan said to NHL.com,
"Just the elements (he can) provide... the offense, the shot, the ability to jump in the play," MacLellan said to The Hockey News. "We want to spend more time in the offensive zone, and I think (Chychrun and our other additions) are going to help that."
Chychrun has played 467 NHL games over his nine-year career, splitting time between Arizona and Ottawa.
After the trade Chychrun said to The Hockey News:
"I’m just so excited to be able to help contribute to this team and try to take this team into the playoffs (again)... everything just seemed like it happened the way it was supposed to and I’m just thrilled to be able to join the Capitals"
Last season, he recorded 41 points (14 goals, 27 assists) in 82 games, matching his career high for points set in 2020-21.
