Capitals' Matt Roy claims $68M star will be pivotal to Washington's future success
The Washington Capitals were active in free agency and one of their biggest moves was signing defenseman Matt Roy to a six-year, $34.5 million contract on July 1 to help bolster their defensive unit. Along with Roy, the Capitals traded for Andrew Mangiapane and Pierre-Luc Dubois, and the defenseman believes the latter will be a key player for the Capitals' success.
Pierre-Luc Dubois signed an eight-year, $68 million contract last June.
"Just like I've said before, he's a great guy to have in the room. He's a good friend, he's a good teammate. He may not be happy with the year he had in LA with us but I truly think he's gonna have a bounce-back year, and I think he's gonna be great for the team," Roy said.
Last season, Dubois recorded 16 goals and 40 points in 82 games in his lone season with LA. It was a disappointing season as the Kings decided to move on from Dubois after just one season as they traded him to Washington.
But Roy expects Dubois to play much better in Washington and be a key reason for their success.
Capitals GM is ecstatic about the Matt Roy addition
Washington was active in free agency after being swept by the New York Rangers in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.
In free agency, Washington inked Roy and general manager Brian MacLellan was pumped for the signing.
"Matt is a steady right-handed defenseman who plays important minutes against the opposition's top players and is extremely responsible in his own end," said MacLellan in a statement. "We feel his addition will help strengthen our blueline for the next several years."
It wasn't just Roy, as the Capitals landed several impact players.
“Pretty excited about it. I think our group did a good job. I think we had a good draft, good free agency, and a couple of good trades. We’re excited to start the season," MacLellan said.
Washington is +170 to make the playoffs, according to DraftKings, which implies a 37% chance of it happening.
