Charlie Lindgren makes his feelings known after scoring bizarre own goal during Caps-Bolts thriller
Washington Capitals goaltender Charlie Lindgren made his feelings known after a comical blunder led to an own goal during Wednesday's game against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
In the third period, the Amalie Arena quickly became a source of laughter and bewilderment among fans. Lindgren stepped out of his crease to play the puck, intending to send it behind the net and around the boards.
However, he misplayed the puck, and it ended up in the back of the net, allowing the Lightning to take a 4-3 lead through a free goal.
Following the game, Lindgren reflected on the mistake, acknowledging that it was one of the worst errors he's made on the ice.
"When I made that big mistake, the boys, we all pretty much laughed it off, even me. I chucked that puck out of the rink, and I kind of chuckled to myself. It was obviously the worst mistake I probably ever made in my life, in terms of on ice," Lindgren said.
"I know better than that. I can't go back now, I don't know what I was thinking. It's the guys who picked me up, and that's why I got a lot of respect for those guys," he added.
Despite Lindgren's blunder, the Capitals recovered, scoring twice to secure a 5-4 win over the Lightning.
Caps HC hails team's resilience after rallying to support Charlie Lindgren in comeback win
Washington Capitals coach Spencer Carbery delivered a motivational locker room speech after the game. He expressed his gratitude to his team for supporting netminder Lindgren.
He praised everyone for digging in and doing a little bit extra to bail Lindgren out.
"We knew that was not us in the first period. Completely flipped the script in the second period. And then we even take it a step further. You help out your brother. And we don't get rattled. Everybody just digs in and does a little bit more to bail him out," Carbery said after the game.
Charlie Lindgren finished the night with 24 saves and posted an SV% of .857. This marked the second straight win for the Caps, who improved their record to 15-6-1. That puts them in third place in the Metro Division with 31 points after 22 games.
