Connor McDavid’s support staff in Edmonton to help understand injury, possible recovery timeline: Report
Connor McDavid went down early last night for the Edmonton Oilers and was unable to return in an eventual loss. Widely heralded as hockey's best player right now, the loss of McDavid would be hard for Edmonton to withstand as they try to avenge last season's championship loss.
The "2 Mutts Hockey Podcast" reported that McDavid is going to utilize the support staff he employs to further understand and recover from this injury:
"His own personal trainers & medical staff will work with the #Oilers staff on this to find the best path forward to see 97 back on the ice ASAP. This isn’t something new, the group around Connor has worked with the Oilers staff before."
McDavid started the game and won the opening face-off, but stayed on the ice for just over 30 seconds. Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski tripped him and sent the forward into the right boards in an awkward fashion. McDavid did skate over to the bench, but he was clearly favoring his left leg.
McDavid has reportedly flown back to Edmonton and is bringing in his personal staff to learn everything he can about the injury. This is not an uncommon occurrence across sports. Many athletes who struggle with their health devote time and resources to understanding how the injuries occur and how to recover, and that's what the Oilers star is doing now.
Oilers discuss Connor McDavid's injury
Without Connor McDavid, the Edmonton Oilers lost by five goals to the Columbus Blue Jackets. If he misses some time, they might struggle offensively. The team reflected after the game on the loss of their star.
Head coach Kris Knoblauch said that McDavid would be heading back to Edmonton for testing. Fellow forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins said, via NHL:
“He's our leader and also the best player in the game. So, of course, you're going to feel it. We’ve got to do a better job of stepping up when a guy like that goes down.”
As for the game itself, the forward said:
“Overall, a lot of battles we should have won. We know that they're a fast team to capitalize on little breakdowns, and that's what we saw.”
McDavid currently does not have a recovery period or official diagnosis. However, multiple reports have indicated that the Oilers superstar is almost certain to miss the game on Thursday against the Nashville Predators.
