Craig Berube shares latest on Auston Matthews' injury as Maple Leafs captain misses Thursday practice
Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews missed practice Thursday due to an upper-body injury. Head coach Craig Berube provided an update on the star's status, saying Matthews is considered day-to-day.
"He’s doing OK. It’s still a day-to-day thing right now." Berube said per NHL insider Mark Masters.
Berube would not confirm whether Matthews would play in the team’s upcoming games.
Matthews missed Tuesday's game against Boston, and his status for Friday's game against Detroit and Saturday's game against Montreal is unclear.
"That’s to be determined still. It’s hard for me to answer that question knowing what I know right now with him today.”
He even missed the November 8th game. Leafs HC said:
"He’s doing OK. It’s still a day-to-day thing right now. It's hard for me to answer that question knowing what I know right now"
Matthews has had a slow start to the season. He scored 69 goals last year to lead the league but so far he has scored only five goals in 13 games. This year, he received the reigns of the Maple Leafs team after former captain John Tavares stepped down to allow Matthews to take on the new responsibility but that could potentially be hindering his production.
Maple Leafs defeat Bruins in Matthews' absence
The Maple Leafs won 4-0 against the Boston Bruins Tuesday despite missing Matthews. Special teams were the key with Toronto scoring three power-play goals and going 6-6 on the penalty kill.
Morgan Rielly gave the Leafs a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal at 8:44 of the second period. William Nylander made it 2-0 at 9:58, with his pass deflecting off Boston defenseman Brandon Carlo’s leg into the net.
Matthew Knies increased the lead to 3-0 in the third period, tipping in a shot from Nylander on the power play. Steven Lorentz added an empty-net goal at 15:58 to complete the win. Goalie Anthony Stolarz made 29 saves for the shutout.
The Leafs went 3-for-7 on the power play, their first game this season with more than two power-play goals. Despite Matthews’ absence, Nylander continued his good form and Stolarz performed well in the net.
