Derek Lalonde makes his feelings known after Lucas Raymond's botched clearance proves costly in Detroit Red Wings loss
Detroit Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde made his feelings known about Lucas Raymond's failed attempt to clear the puck in their 5-4 overtime loss to the Vancouver Canucks on Sunday.
Raymond failed to clear the zone on PK and Lalonde pointed out that the issue wasn't the penalty kill but rather a mistake in execution by the 23-year-old winger.
Lalonde said (8:16):
"It wasn't a (PK) structure (issue) today. It was a mis-clear, and Lucas Raymond is going to be an all-star type player. In this, he misses a clear. We will give him the message, but that's just an execution, so we got two kills after that."
"The frustration (with) the penalty kills is that it's finding its way to sting us. And then today was 3v5, and we had an easy clear. We sort of killed the penalty. Then we lost a battle on a rebound."
The Detroit Red Wings have struggled significantly with their penalty kill this season. In the game against the Canucks, the Red Wings faced a challenging 5-on-3 powerplay situation that lasted for a split between the first and second periods.
During this stretch, Jake DeBrusk capitalized on the opportunity, scoring two goals within less than 45 seconds, putting the Canucks up with a 2-1 advantage. The Red Wings have notably allowed a league-high 24 goals, with five of those coming in their last two games.
This marked the second straight loss for the Detroit Red Wings, who are sixth in the Atlantic Division with 23 points after 24 games.
