Detroit Red Wings HC Derek Lalonde makes his feelings known about Sebastian Cossa's debut; calls out "sloppy" defense in S/O win over Sabres
Detroit Red Wings head coach Derek Lalonde made his feelings known about Sebastian Cossa's NHL debut in a 6-5 shootout win over the Buffalo Sabres on Monday.
After the Red Wings conceded three goals in the first period, Lalonde decided to pull Ville Husso, allowing Cossa to step in between the pipes. He delivered a solid performance, making 12 saves in the debut.
Lalonde acknowledged the challenges Cossa faced, stating (6:50):
"Sharp, good. It’s a tough task for him. One, this is a very high end, skilled team. We've had trouble keeping out of the net in this building. A lot of it is, they dictate the match up, and that Thompson line has given us fits, because they dictate the match up here."
"There wasn't a ton of volume, but there were some really good looks. So it was good on him to hang in there tonight. And obviously I thought he was excellent in the shootout," he added.
The Red Wings struggled defensively against the Sabres, needing to rally from two goals down on two separate occasions. Lalonde expressed his team's performance, noting that it was one of their sloppiest games.
"What's ironic is (tonight's game) was probably one of our more sloppy games..We got a little sloppy tonight, but we produced some offense. You know, you just don't come back from two goals down in the third period in this league. So huge win for the guys."
With the win, the Detroit Red Wings ended their five-game losing streak. They moved to sixth place with 26 points after 28 games.
How the Detroit Red Wings downed the Buffalo Sabres
On Monday, the Detroit Red Wings edged past the Buffalo Sabres at KeyBank Center with a 6-5 shootout victory.
The win allowed the Red Wings to snap their five-game losing streak, while the Sabres suffered their seventh consecutive loss at home.
Besides his first game, Sebastian Cossa also became the first goalie in NHL history to secure a shootout win in his debut.
"Yeah, that's pretty cool. Yeah. Like I said, I didn't, don't think I could have pictured it a better way. And obviously all are really excited. It's probably not gonna settle for a little while. Don't know how much sleep I would be getting tonight, but you know, a really cool moment," Cossa said.
Dylan Larkin scored the decisive goal for Detroit, sealing a much-needed win for Derek Lalonde's side. J.T. Compher. Andrew Copp, Larkin, Lucas Raymond and Moritz Seider all racked up two points for the Red Wings.
