“Don’t want to hurt anyone”: Ryan Lomberg opens up about his scrap with Nathan Bastian in post-game interview
During Friday night’s game between the Calgary Flames and New Jersey Devils, Ryan Lomberg and Nathan Bastian clashed after Lomberg delivered a hard check to Devils forward Paul Cotter. Bastian, stepping up for his teammate, challenged Lomberg and the two had a go at each other.
Lomberg pinned Bastian against the boards and unleashed a barrage of powerful left punches. Despite Bastian’s attempts to defend himself, Lomberg’s strikes landed squarely. The linesmen eventually intervened, but not before Lomberg had delivered a good many punches.
In the post-games interview on Flames TV, Lomberg addressed his on-ice scrap with Nathan Bastian. He mentioned that he respected Bastian’s decision to stand up for his teammate.
“He came over and kind of asked me. I think he thought the initial hit was dirty. You gotta respect the guy for standing up for his teammate. He’s a pretty tough guy, hung in there too. Credit to him."
Bastian was penalized with an instigator penalty, but did not penalize the Flames forward. Lomberg appreciated the referees for not penalizing him, as he was simply trying to finish his check without any intent to play dirty.
“I was already on my way there, kind of started the process of the hit as he was on his way down. I think guys know me to not be a dirty guy. I’m hard, I’m physical, but I respect my opponents.”
“I don't want to hurt anybody. He just came over and thought he had to stand up for his teammate, and I respect him for doing that." Lomberg explained.
Ryan Lomberg talks locker room celebrations after Mikael Backlund’s 1,000th game
Calgary Flames captain Mikael Backlund appeared in his 1,000th NHL career game on Friday. The 3-0 win on the night made the occasion even more memorable.
Speaking of the atmosphere in the locker room afterward, Ryan Lomberg mentioned the team was happy to deliver the win for their captain.
“Yeah, exactly. He deserves that,” Lomberg said. “All his buddies were in the room, cheering him up, hugging everybody. That’s what it’s all about; it’s what he deserves. Very happy we were able to get it done for him tonight.”
Lomberg also expressed pride in his team’s performance, saying they played one of their best, most complete games of the season. He acknowledged the NJ Devils’ offensive firepower, but felt his team did well to contain them and stay strong throughout the full 60 minutes of play.
