"Eagles Forever": Johnny Gaudreau's sister Katie shares glimpses from BC Hockey's special tribute for deceased Gaudreau brothers
Boston College Hockey honored the memory of alumni Matthew and Johnny Gaudreau, who tragically died on August 29 after being struck by a suspected drunk driver while cycling in Salem County. The special event was organized before Boston's game against Maine on Friday.
At the game, Boston College placed rally towels with the brothers' initials on every seat for fans and displayed their initials on the boards near the BC bench. Before the game, the families of Johnny, Matthew and Voce joined a ceremonial puck drop.
Johnny Gaudreau’s mother Janet and sister Katie were in attendance during the game. Katie posted a carousel of pictures from the heartwarming event on Sunday on her Instagram.
In the caption, she wrote:
“Eagles forever.🤍 Thank you BC. 🦅.”
One of the images Katie posted shows the Gaudreau family on the ice, each family member wearing Matthew and Johnny’s numbered Boston shirts. In another, Katie posed with two other fans in Boston College Eagles gear, including hats numbered 13 and 21.
She shared a couple of pictures of Eagles players entering the ice wearing “GAUDREAU” jerseys, with fans capturing these moments on camera. There was a group photo where the Gaudreau family posed with Boston Hockey players’ families and the final clip shared a glimpse of the Conte Forum cheering for the team.
Boston Hockey honors Matthew and Johnny Gaudreau’s legacy in emotional tribute
Coaches and campus leaders, including former coach Jerry York and Father Tony Penna, shared stories of the Gaudreau brothers' contributions on and off the ice in a video tribute.
“Lots of memories for everybody for what they did on the ice, but for everybody who knew them, just great memories off the ice, what good people they were,” said BC coach Greg Brown. [H/T Boston Globe]
Eagles players also wore warm-up jerseys bearing the names and numbers of Voce, Johnny, and Matthew. The jerseys were later auctioned to benefit the Tony Voce Foundation and an adaptive playground project chosen by the Gaudreau family.
Both Meredith and Jane Gaudreau acknowledged the Eagles’ special gesture on their social media accounts. Meredith reposted pictures from the event on her Instagram stories while Jane shared throwback images of her sons from their Boston College days on her stories.
