Elliotte Friedman addresses being called out by Brad Marchand over 'false' contract rumor
Elliotte Freidman reported on the contract situation between Brad Marchand and the Boston Bruins. While the NHL analyst is usually spot on, Marchand claimed the report was false. On his 32 Thoughts podcast on Monday, Friedman cleared the air.
Friedman said (beginning at 2:30 mark):
"He's the source, there's no better source on this one than Marchand since he's the guy who is actually going to sign the contract. So if he says at this point in time that I'm wrong or the story is false, is the phrase he used, then I just have to eat it because he knows where things stand."
He continued, reiterating that he doesn't believe that talks have broken off between the team and the player:
"What someone said to me on Sunday morning was, 'If you're going to be wrong on this one' he thinks I'm going to be wrong on term. He thinks that the Bruins would prefer two years instead of three and we'll see where we go here."
Where the two sides go from here remains to be seen, but Friedman admitted he could be wrong after being called out by Marchand.
What did Brad Marchand Say about Elliotte Friedman?
Elliotte Friedman reported that the Boston Bruins and Brad Marchand were trying to work out the details of a three-year deal. He said on Monday that the two sides are working on something, just not necessarily a three-year deal.
This came after Marchand publicly refuted the report. Friedman had his sources, but according to TSN, Marchand called it "false." The player also added that he won't be talking about it anymore publicly:
"I’m not big about talking about contract stuff in the media."
One of the leaders on the Boston Bruins, Marchand is currently in the last year of an eight-year, $49 million contract that he signed in 2016. He will become an unrestricted free agent in July at the age of 36. He has scored a goal and has six points in nine games in 2024.
