Elliotte Friedman weighs in on Igor Shesterkin's probable next Rangers contract
NHL insider Elliotte Friedman spoke about the contract extension talks between Igor Shesterkin and the New York Rangers. The star goalie is entering the final year of his four-year, $22.67 million deal.
Shesterkin was eligible to sign an extension as of July 1, but it has yet to happen. The Russian is one of the best goalies in the NHL, and when he does sign, he could very well be the highest-paid goalie in the league.
On his 32 Thoughts The Podcast, Friedman said Shesterkin's contract will be a massive number.
"Shesterkin, I think the Rangers know this is gonna be a big number. I wouldn't be surprised if he's going to be the number one paid goalie in the NHL. It's just a matter of getting there," Friedman said.
The highest-paid active NHL goalie is the Florida Panthers' Sergei Bobrovsky at $10 million per season. The Tampa Bay Lightning's Andrei Vasilevskiy makes $9.5 million, while Connor Hellebuyck makes $8.5 million per season with the Winnipeg Jets.
Shesterkin could very well become the highest-paid goalie or have his salary in the $9 million range.
In his last season with the Rangers, Shesterkin went 36-17-2 with a 2.58 GAA and a .912 SV%.
Igor Shesterkin says contract talks are ongoing
Igor Shesterkin said his agent is in talks with the New York Rangers on a potential contract extension.
Shesterkin is letting his agent handle the extension talks, as he is focused on the 2024-25 NHL season.
“My agent, Maxim Moliver, is talking to the general manager,” Shesterkin said, via The Hockey News. “I can’t say anything else. For me, the most important thing now is preparing for the season and being 100% ready mentally and physically. An exciting season is ahead, and the agent will discuss the contract.”
According to The New York Post's Mollie Walker, Shesterkin's camp is aiming for as high as $12 million a year. The Russian would deserve to be the highest-paid goalie in the NHL as he is a key reason for the Rangers' success.
Igor Shesterkin was selected 118th overall in the 2014 NHL draft by the Rangers. He made his NHL debut during the 2019-20 season. He became the Rangers' starting goalie in the 2021-22 season.
