"Envy of any city in the country": Calgary Flames' new $800,000,000 Scotia Arena garners high hopes from CSEC CEO Robert Hayes

The Calgary Flames introduced a rendering of their new $800 million arena, Scotia Place, that will be completed in 2027. Construction on the new arena has also officially begun.

Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation CEO Robert Hayes spoke about the building saying that he believes it will be one of the best in the NHL and is excited about its construction.

"It's going to be the envy of any city in the country, I think," Hayes said.

Meanwhile, Flames head coach Ryan Huska said he was blown away with the team's future home and can't wait to see it completed.

"To see the design and the layout and all the different types of architecture, for me, this is going to be a pretty incredible building that I think is going to, selfishly for our hockey team, attract players, I feel," Huska said, via NHL.com. "I think it's going to be a place where people are going to want to spend time around. The look of it ... I was a little bit blown away to be quite honest with the design that was put into it. I'm excited. I wish we could fast forward a little bit right now."

The arena will have a seating capacity of 18,400.

The New Flames arena will make Calgary a go-to destination

The Calgary Flames' current home, Scotiabank Saddledome, is one of the oldest in the NHL, which was opened back in 1983.

Along with the new arena, Calgary also has plans to build an entertainment district around it to attract even more fans to the city.

"Calgary is a city for all seasons, and projects like this one give even more people even more reasons to experience its vibrancy 365 days a year," Alberta premier Danielle Smith said.
"Once the revitalization is complete, Calgary will be giving every major city in North America a run for its money as a destination for events, whether you're here to see a concert or watch the Flames in the playoffs ... as a place for community where friends and neighbors can meet and catch a show, have a dinner, or stroll the Rivers District, and as the best place to call home."

The Flames missed the playoffs last season with a 38-39-5. It was the third time in four years that they failed to reach the postseason.
