Evander Kane injury: Analyst makes major claim regarding Oilers star's availability for next season
NHL analyst Bob Stauffer said that Edmonton Oilers star Evander Kane will likely miss the start of the 2024-25 NHL season.
Kane dealt with a sports hernia last season but he played through it in the playoffs, before he was a scratch. The injury has lingered into the offseason and according to Stauffer, Kane may need surgery and likely will miss the start of the season.
"Hearing there is a very good chance that the @EdmontonOilers Evander Kane won't be ready for the start of the season...that he may require surgery...and is likely to be on LTIR to start the year," Stauffer wrote.
If Kane does miss the start of the season, it would be a tough blow to the Oilers lineup. Kane was an important player for Edmonton last season as he added a physical style and some offense.
Kane skated in 24 goals and 20 assists for 44 points in 77 games. In the playoffs, he added four goals and four assists for eight points in 30 games. Kane has two years left on his deal that pays him $5.125 million per season.
Oilers banking on Evander Kane being healthy
After free agency on July 1, Oilers CEO of Hockey Operations Jeff Jackson didn't give much of an update on Evander Kane.
Instead, Jackson said he and Kane are just focused on making sure he is healthy as possible. Jackson said, via NHL.com:
“As we’ve said, he’s been dealing with an issue with his hip and we're just going through a process right now to see what we need to do on that front. He's getting the best care he can get on the advice from our doctors, and we're going to consult with both Evander and his agent Dan Milstein to make sure that we're getting second opinions and things like that.
"So that's sort of where it's at. Nothing's planned as of yet beyond that, so first is a consultation with a specialist. He’s on our roster and on our cap and we’ve got to take care of his health first and foremost to make sure he's healthy."
The Oilers did go out and sign Jeff Skinner and Viktor Arvidsson to boost their offense. Edmonton also re-signed Corey Perry, Adam Henrique and Mattias Janmark.
