Evander Kane injury: NHL insider provides major update on Oilers star's surgery
Edmonton Oilers forward Evander Kane played most of the 2023-24 season with a sports hernia. The injury forced him to miss five of the seven Stanley Cup Final games played. NHL insider Mark Spector shared that Kane will have surgery in the next 10 days to repair the hernia. The surgery will determine his recovery time and could affect how the Oilers handle their salary cap.
On Friday, Spector shared Kane's surgery update on X.
"Evander Kane is scheduled for surgery in the next “10 days or so” to repair damage from the sports hernia he carried through last season, I am told. Post-surgery prognosis should shed light on the recovery period, and of course, how Oilers will approach their salary cap."
Kane will likely miss the start of the regular season. If he’s out for over 24 days or 10 games, the Oilers may place him on the long-term injured reserve (LTIR) list. This would help the Oilers, who have just $946,000 in cap space, free up more room. Kane's current contract includes a $5.125-million AAV.
Last season, the veteran forward scored 24 goals and had 20 assists in 77 games. His absence will give young players like Vasily Podkolzin a chance for more ice time.
Evander Kane and Darnell Nurse will not be present in training camp
The Edmonton Oilers will begin training camp without Evander Kane and Darnell Nurse due to injuries. Kane played with a sports hernia last season and is scheduled to have surgery which could sideline him for a considerable amount of time. However, Nurse could join the Oilers later in training camp.
NHL insider Tom Gazzola took to X and posted an update on Thursday.
"Hearing that Evander Kane & Darnell Nurse are expected to start training camp on the shelf due to injury. Nurse has been on the ice for informal skates & continues to heal up a lingering injury from the playoffs. The projection is he will be good to go later in camp."
Nurse is recovering from an injury he suffered during the Oilers’ series against the Florida Panthers. He played in all seven games of the finals despite the hard hit he took in Game 2 and recorded three points.
Nurse is an integral part of his team's defense and will need him to play at his best when he returns to action.
