Ex-NHL executive Shawn Simpson names one thing Ottawa Senators must avoid regarding free agents
Shawn Simpson, a former NHL front office executive, believes the Ottawa Senators need to avoid one-year deals in free agency. Ottawa is coming off a disappointing season where the Senators failed to make the playoffs.
Entering the offseason, Ottawa has just over $12 million in cap space, according to CapFriendly. The Senators enter the offseason with several needs, but Simpson says the team needs to avoid one-year deals.
"The Sens have to avoid anyone on 1 year deals, whether they become an RFA or UFA. So any deal that involves this must come with an extension," Simpson wrote.
It is an interesting take from Simpson who was selected in the third round of the 1986 NHL draft but never played a game in the league. But, he did go on to work in the front office for both the Washington Capitals and Toronto Maple Leafs, so he knows plenty about free agency and team needs.
Ottawa Senators in 'lots of dialogue' in trade talks
The Ottawa Senators will be looking to get back into the playoffs next season, and general manager Steve Staios said the team is in trade talks.
“There’s lots of dialogue right now,” Staios told Postmedia on Friday morning.
Ottawa has been linked to Calgary Flames goalie Jacob Markstrom, as the Sens are looking to improve their goalie tandem.
Staios said the team has been busy as it prepares for the draft and free agency.
“It’s been busy,” Staios said. “You know what happens, you get to the combine, you spend time interviewing the players and getting to know guys to prepare for the draft, but managers are around and you spend a lot of time with lots of ideas going back and forth.
“Each manager is looking at their group, they look at where they’re at, and what they might want to accomplish.”
Ottawa has also been rumored to be in trade talks involving forward Mathieu Joseph and defenseman Jakob Chychrun.
The Senators enter the offseason with only one pending unrestricted free agent Dominik Kubalik. However, Ottawa does have four pending RFAs Boris Katchouk, Parker Kelly, Shane Pinto and Erik Brannstrom.
The Ottawa Senators also hold the seventh and 25th overall picks in the first round of the 2024 NHL draft.
