Ex-NHLer Ryan Whitney reacts to Chicago Blackhawks’ first-period performance against Sabres
Former NHL player Ryan Whitney reacted to the Chicago Blackhawks' rough first period against the Buffalo Sabres on Friday night. The Blackhawks gave up 4 goals in the opening frame to the Sabres, who sit last in the Atlantic Division with a 12-19-4 record.
Zach Benson, Jack Quinn, Dylan Cozens and Alex Tuch scored to give Buffalo a commanding 4-0 lead after just 20 minutes of play.
Whitney took to Twitter to voice his disbelief at Chicago's horrible start.
"The Blackhawks just played the worst period of hockey in the NHL I’ve ever seen. And I played on the 2010-2011 Edmonton Oilers" he tweeted about the Blackhawks' performance.
In another tweet, Whitney ramped up the criticism even further, writing:
"The Blackhawks are making the Sabres look like the ‘97 Red Wings."
He was referring to the legendary 1997 Detroit Red Wings, who went on to win the Stanley Cup.
Fans react to Ryan Whitney's comments on Chicago Blackhawks’ first-period performance
Hockey fans across social media platforms erupted after Ryan Whitney criticized the Chicago Blackhawks' lackluster first-period showing.
One fan tweeted:
"Sorry Whit, but no. The Sabres are just back," suggesting Buffalo's improved play was the real story.
Another fan wasn't having Whitney's criticism and responded:
"Lmao this guy acting like the 1996 Sharks vs Red Wings never happened," referencing another historic poor performance on X.
Here are some fan reactions:
"Made the sabres look like they’re tracking for a president’s trophy" one fan wrote.
"@ryanwhitney6 they could sign you tonight, as in, and be just as sh*tty. At least they'd have some Pink Whitney nips in the lockeroom. another fan wrote.
"98 might be the worst “generational prospect” we’ve seen. Not even close to McDavid or Crosby which he was billed as" a user commented.
"Ryan I can’t believe my eyes. We looked like a Junior B team that had too much fun at the local silver bullet the night before." another user wrote.
At the end of two periods, the Sabres are in a 4-1 lead over the Blackhawks. Tyler Bertuzzi scored the lone goal for Chicago.
