Ex-NHLer Tony DeAngelo weighs in on 'Hawk Tuah Girl' Hailey Welch's meme coin crash from $490,000,000 market cap
Defenceman Tony DeAngelo has been playing in the KHL for SKA Saint Petersburg this year. He last played in the NHL for the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2023 season. On Friday, he weighed in on influencer Hailey Welch, known as the “Hawk Tuah Girl,” who faced backlash after her cryptocurrency, $HAWK, crashed.
The meme coin launched on Solana on Wednesday and initially surged to a market cap of nearly $490 million. Within hours its value dropped by 95%, leaving many investors angry and confused.
Tony DeAngelo reacted to the news with a blunt post on X:
“Anyone who cares about this girl deserves what they got lol 😆 😂"
Welch rose to fame this summer through a viral street interview. Her comment on the interview went viral on TikTok, as she said:
"Oh, you gotta give him that hawk tuah and sp*t on that thang!”
Following this, the video gained massive popularity and she utilized it by launching her merch and a podcast. She later also endorsed Tesla’s Cybertruck and Elon Musk’s X platform. Lately, she entered the cryptocurrency world, promoting Bitcoin and Dogecoin before launching her own coin, $HAWK.
The coin’s launch created a lot of buzz and its value surged by 900% on the first day, benefiting early buyers. However, allegations of insider trading and fraud surfaced per Rolling Stone.
Many investors accused $HAWK’s developers of running a “pump-and-dump” scheme. This is when a coin’s value is artificially inflated and quickly sold off. Legal complaints are now being filed by those who are affected.
Tony DeAngelo shared his probable reason for exit from NHL
In early November, Tony DeAngelo said that his support for Donald Trump hurt his hockey career. DeAngelo celebrated Trump’s win as the 47th U.S. president, and praised the "silent majority" on X:
"This feels good. I was one of the only athletes to stand behind Trump from day one. It’s one of the reasons I’m not in the NHL anymore but our country is more important! The silent majority once again showed up, people who unfortunately had to be scared to support used the VOTE!"
DeAngelo’s outspoken political views have often sparked debates. However, it seems he remains proud of standing by his beliefs.
