Ex-NHLer urges Blueshirts to 'beg for' Rangers GM's 'forgiveness' after Jacob Trouba trade
Former NHLer and podcaster Ryan Whitney has called on New York Rangers fans to apologize following the trade of Jacob Trouba.
The Rangers traded Trouba to the Anaheim Ducks last week in exchange for defenseman Urho Vaakaninen and a fifth-round pick in the 2025 NHL draft.
Whitney expressed his thoughts on social media, criticizing fans who have been vocal about their dissatisfaction with Blueshirts GM Chris Drury.
The former NHL player highlighted that the club moved Trouba without retaining any salary along with draft selection, suggesting that the trade was a significant achievement for the Blueshirts.
"Ranger fans who’ve been chirping Chris Drury need to go down to MSG and wait outside player and staff parking and beg for forgiveness. Gassed Trouba without retaining any salary, got a former 1st round pick (don Sweeney pick, so doesn’t count, though) and a draft pick. Amazing work," Whitney posted.
Jacob Trouba played for the Rangers from the 2019-20 season and became the captain for three seasons after taking over in the 2022-23 season.
Trouba first appeared on the trade market during the offseason, but the Blueshirts struggled to finalize a deal, mostly due to a no-trade clause in his contract.
His trade to the Ducks marked a notable trend for the Rangers, as Trouba became the fourth consecutive captain to leave the organization before their contract's expiration.
Jacob Trouba wasn't pleased with how the Rangers handled his situation
Jacob Trouba expressed dissatisfaction with how the Rangers managed his situation following his trade to the Ducks.
The 30-year-old defenseman conveyed that his only concern was the public nature of the situation and how it unfolded. In a video released by Sportsnet on Friday, Trouba expressed:
“I was put in a position this summer to make a decision between my career and my family," Trouba said. "And, I chose my family. I would choose my family a hundred times over again. I don’t feel bad. I was happy about it.
"The only thing I didn’t like about it was made public necessarily. Or how everything unfolded so publicly, and, I mean, it’s part of New York," he added.
Trouba played for six seasons with the Blueshirts, accumulating 136 points through 31 goals and 105 assists in 364 games.
Overall, he has racked up 315 points through 73 goals and 242 assists in 772 career games over 12 seasons in the NHL, which also includes his six-season tenure with the Winnipeg Jets.
