Flames' Ryan Lomberg looking forward to reuniting with struggling $84,000,000 forward
Ryan Lomberg signed a two-year deal in free agency with the Calgary Flames, the team he first began his career with. He will also reunite with a former friend of his in Jonathan Huberdeau, two things that are particularly exciting about the next phase of the star player's career.
Lomberg said:
"My family and I are so excited to get up to Calgary and get to work with this group of guys. The front office, coaching staff, teammates, it's going to be great."
He added that it's the time of year when the gears are shifting for hockey and it's an exciting time in preparation for the next season. He added that his former team, the Florida Panthers, weren't Stanley Cup Final contenders when he arrived four years ago, so he's excited about what can be built in Calgary.
He added about Huberdeau, whose contract totals $84 million:
"I'm excited to get back with Jonathan. There's no doubt he's one of the best players in the league, His skill is world-class, he's an amazing teammate."
Lomberg said he's probably most excited about getting to cheer Huberdeau on again. He noted that he'll have the best seat in the house to watch the $84 million man go to work. He hasn't had it all together of late, but Lomberg firmly believes that Huberdeau will return to top status very soon, and he's excited to be on his side for it.
Ryan Lomberg returning to first NHL team
Ryan Lomberg was drafted by the Calgary Flames and he made his debut in the 2017-18 season. He spent the first two seasons of his career there before landing with the Florida Panthers, and he won the 2023-2024 Stanley Cup with them.
Jonathan Huberdeau played for the Florida Panthers first. He was drafted and joined their roster in 2012-2013. The star player spent the next 10 seasons in Florida (the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 seasons spent with Lomberg on the roster) before moving to Calgary.
Now, both star players who have spent time on the same teams will once again be reunited. They have both only played for two teams so far.
